The State is attractive and irresistible to people who are looking for tranquility and harmony, including the magical setting of the beaches along the Gulf of Mexico. The closest city is Progreso which is 30 minutes from the capital city of Mérida. Progress boasts one of the most visited beaches in the state along with a growing 6 mile long commercial pier and port visited by many cruise ships, Many quaint fishing villages are to the east and west of Progreso including; Sisal to the west; Telchac to the east, Chelem Puerto and Chuburna port to the west; Chicxulub to the east. In general just a short drive from Merida you can enjoy delicious fresh catch fish dishes year round.
You can enjoy in the summer the picturesque arrival of the famous flamingos, the intercoastal is their home for most of the year.
Another growing fascinating attraction in Yucatan is visiting the many fabulous cenotes throughout the state. There are guided tours to these mysterious under ground caverns.
